DTP and meningitis vaccinations

02.01.2025

The DTP vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. These are serious diseases.

You need a total of five doses of the DTP to build up immunity and give you longer-term protection.

The first four doses should have been administered to children before they reach four years of age, with a fifth dose given in S3 (at around 14 years of age).

The Meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine helps protect against meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning), which are caused by meningococcal bacteria A, C ,W and Y.

Meningitis and septicaemia are very serious diseases that can cause permanent disability and death, with young people having a higher risk of getting meningococcal disease.

More detailed information on these vaccines can be found on NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Childhood Immunisation page.

Both of these vaccines are administered in East Ayrshire schools, and an envelope with an information booklet about the vaccines, ingredients and any side effects, as well as a consent form, will be given by schools to all S3 pupils and any older pupils with any incomplete courses. If your child does not receive a pack/consent form, please enquire at their school.

Forms should be completed and returned to the school as soon as possible – even where you do not wish your child to be vaccinated. Failure to return the form will not be taken to mean non consent. If appropriate, your child may be immunised after giving their own consent.
