World Social Work Day 2025
This month we marked World Social Work Day (18 March) with a coffee break event celebrating social work staff across East Ayrshire.
‘Bun and a Blether’ events took place in the Johnnie Walker Bond and Rothesay House, where staff were invited to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and cake while learning more about social work and its life-changing impact on individuals and families worldwide.
Marion MacAulay (Head of Children’s Health, Care and Justice Services and Chief Social Work Officer) and Dale Meller (East Ayrshire HSCP Senior Manager) told us about their experiences in the social work profession and what social work means to them…
Marion:
“For me, social work is a values-based profession, driven by our core values of service, social justice and human worth.
“It’s about supporting a person to be the best that they can be, challenging discrimination and promoting equality.
“It’s about recognising the inherent talents and abilities within each and every person that we work with, and supporting them to develop and recognise those in themselves.”

Dale:
“Social work means being curious of everything – people, situations, solutions – and being curious about yourself.
“Being a social worker involves using all of your senses and intuition, bringing your whole self to work to really be curious about the world and why things are the way they are.
“For me, it’s a joy to see someone you’ve supported move on to take a step forward or achieve the change they’ve needed.”
