Attendees at the recent Learning Disability Nightclub Experience event

Learning Disability Awareness Week focuses on independence and empowerment

30.09.2025

To mark Learning Disability Awareness Week (Monday 8 – Sunday 14 September), our local area coordinators in Vibrant Communities organised a number of events for adults with learning disabilities in East Ayrshire.

These included a ‘Nightclub Experience’ event at Bakers nightclub in Kilmarnock and an information event at Kilmarnock’s North West Area Centre.

On Wednesday 10 September, adults from a range of learning disability groups across East Ayrshire enjoyed a fantastic night of dancing and socialising at Bakers nightclub, which provided them with an authentic nightclub experience in a safe and inclusive environment. It was great to see such a high turnout and so many adults taking to the dancefloor to show off their best moves!

This was followed by a Learning Disability Information Event at Kilmarnock’s North West Centre, which took place on Friday 12 September. This event offered free information and advice for adults with a learning disability, on everything from personal wellbeing to relationships and community participation. There was also a chance to join a seated exercise class and chat to staff from third sector organisations, East Ayrshire HSCP and NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

It was fantastic to see such a wide range of supports available for adults with learning disabilities in East Ayrshire, provided by our Thinking Differently Team, East Ayrshire Carers Centre, Vibrant Communities, Police Scotland Ayrshire, and our very own Community Learning Disability Team.
