An elderly lady who attended our recent Silver Pride event

International Day of Older Persons

01.10.2024

Today is International Day of Older Persons, where we recognise the achievements, talents and contributions of our older generation and raise awareness of the issues which affect their lives.

In East Ayrshire we have held a number of events over the past year, celebrating the older people in our community and identifying ways we can support them to remain healthy, happy and independent in later life.

A number of care home residents attended The Great East Ayrshire Bake-Off in April, followed by the highly anticipated Senior Care Home Games and Silver Pride event in June, which was the first of its kind in Scotland and achieved national media coverage.

Arlene Bunton, Scottish Care Independent Sector Lead for East Ayrshire, said the lives of our older residents are a “cause for celebration”:

“In East Ayrshire we truly believe our older adults are our biggest assets. The richness of their lives and the stories they have to share give us hope and are cause for celebration.

“I have always advocated for those accessing social care within our communities to remain a part of the community, invited and included in all that we do. The celebrations of the skill, competitiveness and uniqueness of our older adults demonstrates just how wonderful they all are.

“A move to a care home in East Ayrshire is seen as a change pf postcode only. You are still part of our community, you are still welcome in your community and you still belong to your community.”

Join us this International Day of Older Persons by celebrating the spirit and character of an older person in your life!
